It’s the time of year when everyone starts making cookies. Even people who bake nothing else the rest of the year will sometimes get in on this. What I don’t understand is buying the dough pre-made, though. The absolute worst part is rolling out the dough. Making it is fairly simple and easy with a mixer. Cutting out shapes and baking them is fun and straightforward. Decorating is obviously the best part. But rolling? Ugh. I would gladly have a tool that eliminated that step for me. Anyone else agree? I know there are spritz cookies but my mom and I would make them and have the darndest time trying to get the cookies to push out of the tube. So, yeah, not a helpful tool. Unless we just had bad luck or a bad tool?
Today’s post is not about a recipe for sugar cookies. Basically, I just used another blogger’s recipe which worked really well. This is more a “if I can do it, you can do it” post. I am horrible with decorating and making things look pretty. I’m not a big fashion person, home decorator, cake decorator, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to be that person. I see other people do it and am always impressed. Many of my friends are that way, which makes me both sad that I am not better, but also okay since I can always ask their advice. I am better at other things, and I am satisfied with that. Most of the time. Then there are times when I decide to stretch my limits. I am here to tell you to stretch your limits as well. You could surprise yourself with how good you are.
Growing up, carving pumpkins meant that I did pick out a pumpkin I liked at the patch (after riding on a hayride), and then drew a face on it with a marker. I was also responsible for cleaning out my own pumpkin guts. My dad would do the actual carving. I didn’t even know about the stencils/etc. that people use. We just did the basic triangle eyes, nose, and sharp teeth. Apparently there is a whole world of pumpkin design out there.
This post is by far not done. I definitely am still in the beginning stages of learning to decorate cakes, but as I learn tips, I will share them here. It was great having my friend Lisa over to practice making cakes. We made a chocolate cake from the Miette cookbook, then used French buttercream to decorate both. Hers was beautiful:
