I’m not normally the come up with recipes completely out of thin air type. I don’t know if that will ever be me. But, I do sometimes make my own thing after being inspired by other recipes. I wanted to do something special for some salmon we had. In a cookbook I found a recipe that used mint (not our favorite ingredient), parsley, and lemon along with a few other ingredients. I decided to take from that and come up with something using what I had on hand. It ended up delicious and something I will make (or riff on) again.
I know, you might say that I already made croissants so why am I making “almost” croissants. Well, these were pretty good for much less work.
I like that these croissants are easy to space out the work involved, doing a bit here and a bit there. And then you can bake them fresh for when you want them.
I was meal planning for the week and was looking for main courses when I came across an asparagus and fennel soup. Now, you might say…where is the fennel? Well, I saw this soup but figured it wasn’t prime season for asparagus, leeks, or fennel right now so I would wait. While I was at the grocery store I actually saw some good looking asparagus. When I went to cook it that night, I decided to look back at the soup recipe. I missed most of the key ingredients but decided to do my own version. It ended up so good that all of us loved it. Even the Chiplet kept asking for more, pointing at that bowl over his meat (his usual favorite part of a meal).
This is an oven testing recipe. Unintentionally. Have you heard about how you can test your oven for hot spots by spreading out a bunch of bread slices on a sheet and toasting them to see which parts get brown first? Well I never wanted to do that because it seemed like a waste of bread, but for this recipe you need to do it so I got to test my oven and eat the bread! Oh, and yes, this is another Thanksgiving post. So sue me. (Please don’t.)
My birthday is always interesting as an adult/mom/wife. I enjoy cooking, so it can be fun making food for my own birthday. But, I also don’t want anything that would be exhausting or boring. So, this past birthday I was flipping through my cookbooks and came across this recipe. I’d never made anything with brisket before, but wanted to try. It seemed so easy but seemed potentially good. I consulted with my dad and M since they had cooked brisket before. The recipe was a bit different from what they’ve done before but they said it sounded like it could work.
And it did!
I had saved this recipe to make and I wasn’t really sure what these would be like, but we ended up enjoying them. I was curious how they related to popovers and apparently are almost identical depending on your recipes. From what I could gather, this tends to be the savory version of a popover. But I’m sure I’m wrong on some level there, too. That was my best interpretation, in case you’ve made popovers before. I liked that I didn’t need a special pan or special ingredients. Everything was stuff I have on hand, and you could mix up the herbs.
